Uses
Tamiflu is used in treating symptoms of the influenza virus, those which last for less then two days. It may also be administered on people who are possibly exposed to influenza, but are currently not showing any symptoms of such. Tamiflu is not intended as treatment for the common cold.
How to take Tamiflu
Tamiflu comes in 75mg capsules and as an oral suspension. The medication may be taken with or without prior food intake, but its potency is enhanced with the former case. The advised dose in treatment is 75mg, twice a day, for five days. Treatment for symptoms should commence within two days of onset.
Side effects
Common and less serious side effects include dizziness and headache; eye redness; insomnia; diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, and coughing and other respiratory symptoms. If such effects are experienced, users are advised to consult with their doctor, or seek medical help. If allergic reactions such as skin rashes which blisters and peels, a difficulty in breathing, swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat, and hives are experienced, discontinue use and seek medical help.
Drug precautions
Tamiflu is not intended as a substitute for the influenza vaccine. Annual vaccinations for the flu are therefore advised. Inform a doctor if such vaccines are received within the past two weeks, or if the user has a kidney, lung or heart disease, or other severe medical problems. The same applies for conceiving and breastfeeding women.
Drug interactions
Users are advised to inform their physician about prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines which they are currently taking, including those prescribed by other physicians, vitamins and minerals, and herbal products, as these may interact with the potency of Tamiflu.
Overdose
The usual symptoms in cases of overdose can include vomiting and nausea. If the user suspects that an overdose is acquired, immediate medical help is strongly recommended.
Missed dose
In case of a missed dose, take it as soon as it is remembered. But if the succeeding intake is less than two hours away, the missed dose should be skipped altogether, and the regular intake schedule followed accordingly. Avoid taking extra doses in order to make up for the missed dose.
Storage
Tamiflu should be kept refrigerated, within temperatures of 2? and 8?C, and should be kept from freezing.
